Sofia Buchuck & Canto Libre (Chile)
With enchanting sounds of charangos, songs of Violeta Parra and Victor Jara, pioneers of the new chilean song or Nueva cancion chilena. against the backdrop of beautiful arpillera quilts from Chile and Northern Ireland. against the backdrop of beautiful arpillera quilts from Chile and Northern Ireland.
This show includes rhythms from Mexico, Chile, Peru and Cuba. musicianas are Diego Laverde colombian harp, Jhonny Rodriguez charango and panpipes, Sofia Buchuck voices and percussion with cheguevara from Venezuela, poems by Maria Eugenia Bravo chilean poet in exile,
Born in Cusco, Peru, Sofia has travelled across Latin America learning the culture and traditions of that continent. She also speaks Quechua which she has learnt from her indigenous grand mother.
Sofia sings songs of memory of the entire continent, from the Andes to the coast and from Mexico to Argentina. She also plays pre-Colombian instruments such as pan flutes and seeds from the rain forest. Sofia performs accompanied by Andean instruments such as charango, harp, base and guitar, Cajon-Peruano/percussion played by talented and well-known musicians based in London.
She has performed as a solo artist with her Andean band, at the International Fringe festival of Edinburgh, Wales, Festival del Pueblo- the biggest Latin American festival in London 2004, Thames festival, Bristol, and the Royal opera house 2005. She has taken part in many musical groups as well as in theatre, dance and performing arts before setting her own show. She has a vast experience on delivering talks and workshops of Latin American culture and music, for universities, schools and symposiums.
Sofia was the first Hispanic singer to perform at the Royal Opera house accompanied by three fantastic musicians and one of the best Peruvian guitarists “Julio Humala”, Chano Diaz, Jose Navarro, Kiefer Santander and Diego Laverde. In the 2005 Sofia B was awarded the prize as best Latin American artist of the year in the UK.
